Just about every major news outlet this week has been reporting that Apple is the most valuable company in history.

But this is true only if you fail to adjust for inflation.

The truth is that IBM holds that record. When adjusted for inflation, IBM was worth $1.3 trillion in today's money.

The 1999 version of Microsoft wins the silver, valued at $856 billion in today's money.
